The last but not the least, the day after our arrival we got sick, this time is was serious: rashes on the legs, feet and arms. It was so itchy that we could not sleep at night and we look terrible. We had to go to the doctor, we opted for the traditional Chinese medicine. Man came with us to translate although the doctor could speak English well and she took her time. Most of the time we had to rest, take our medicine after meals. We had a special diet: no garlic, no onions, spices, chili, ginger, no sea food, no coffee or strong tea, no sweets and even no BBQ. We did not that!!! Too late we had oneJ We went every too days to check the evolution. It went from bad to worse to good!!!! We had special bath to take mostly in the evening. It made our stay very difficult but Pan and Man were very patient and helped us a lot.
FOOD FESTIVAL Bouboul, the new member of the family, was so cute and so energetic. He is 2 month old and we enjoyed training him and playing with him. We took care of him when we stayed at Pan and Man´s house. SHATIN - 1000 Budha temple and the heritage Museum Sha Tin District is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong. SHEUNG WAN Sheung Wan was one of the earliest settled places by the British, and belonged to the historical Victoria City.

At our friend´s place: Pan and Man The purpose of coming to Hong Kong was to meet Pan and Man, a couple we met in Croatia a year ago. At that time, they were heading to Europe to experience a European winter, they even visited Santa Claus´ house in Norway! They spent 14 months on the road before coming back to their house in Fanling. (30km away from Hong Kong Island). 2014 - OCTOBER - CROATIA 2015 - NOVEMBER - HONG KONG Pan was very busy, she got a new job in a TV production. At that time, the TV station was renewing the program. She worked long hours every day including Saturday and Sunday. Man did not want to go back to his former job and tries something new: carpenter, leather workshop and studies sport psychology. He was also very busy but he had a flexible timetables. They took us around to their friends´ flat for their monthly gathering, local restaurants and local markets including an organic one which is located in their neighbourhood. Pan took us to a Tao temple next to their house. She explained how expensive it is to have a picture and name written on a wall, it is similar to a cemetery. People will come and pray for their relatives, friends. We could not take any pictures because the camera will catch the ghosts which will stay in the camera. They can give people troubles. Man showed us where he grew up in Tai Po (meaning big steps) and the touristic parts of Hong Kong. He even entered for the first in a building we can call “little India” as they were only Indian people selling stuffs including Indian sim cards and delicious food. It reminded us our time in India and we could name the food specialities, greet people in Hindu! Man went for a walk with us in the countryside and explained us how Chinese people came for few hours, crossed the border which is only few km away and buy stuffs in bulk (milk powder, shoes, cookies etc.). They have a particular feature as they walk around with big suitcases or even prams. TAI PO: MARKET - OLD TRAIN STATION - A MAN MO TEMPLE By exploring their area on our first week end, we met a lady (Phy) who arranges “leather workshop” where anyone can make his/her own bags, purse, wallet. Man, Önder and I were so interested that we made an appointment for the week after. That day, I was feeling poorly, I struggled a lot!!! for the guys it was a real pleasure... WORKSHOP FANLING WALK 1 & 2
From Patoyo, a virgin island to a busy society: Hong Kong! A world tour is full of discovery. What we discovered when we arrived in Hong Kong, exactly in Lantau. Hong Kong is just one territory out of four: Hong Kong Island, Lantau, Kowloon and the new territories. 70% of the territory is forest but now building constructions expand to national parks. Hong-Kong went back to China in 1997 but they are ruled under a special treaty, which will expire in 50 years. It is said that China has “one country and two systems”. The government tends to turn to the Chinese authority although the majority of Cantonese are against. Cantonese remains the main language but the nation search for its identity. What is to be Cantonese today? A difficult question to answer. The society is stuck between modernity and tradition, British and now US influences versus Chinese ones. Hong Kong is famous for its skyline and its skyscrapers. Living in a house is considered as old fashion. For Hong Kong people it is a must to work all lifelong to pay back a credit. Big or small families will live in high buildings (50 floors), in a small flat with tiny windows and no balcony. Most of the time dogs are not allowed! Everything is built not to walk. People will step out of the flat and will have a direct access to the tube, to bus terminals, to malls and ideally to parks. Footbridges allow people to go to one place to another. Some days we did not walk to the street! Like Europe, there is too much concrete and too many fences! Life in Hong Kong is stressful, consumption driven, like in any metropoles. People run behind the time and are too busy. Unlike Europeans, Hong Kong people have only 12 days holidays. They go for example to Japan or Thailand.
Visiting Hong Kong is a pleasure! The city is very safe, packed, and very clean but a bit too sterile and sometimes the buildings made us dizzy. Dogs are never allowed in parks, eating and drinking are also restricted and smoking is allowed in hidden places! Toilettes are free, can be found everywhere and are very clean. Hong Kong is not only money, consumption but poverty, as well like anywhere else. ! Unlike Europe, there is no social support... See stats below for 2014-2015. |
